First stop off the ferry: The chamber of commerce. Located right at the ferry landing and marked by the sign that reads: "visitor's center," you can't miss it. Here you may pick up a map, get directions and ask questions.

During the high season, the ferries run hourly so there are lots of options for how long you will be on island. Before Memorial day or after Labor day, the ferry schedule thins out so you'll have to budget your time wisely.

Center the day around your desired activity. Whether it's a day lazing around on the beach or hiking or sightseeing by bike or moped, fishing or watersports or nosing around the shops, plan your time accordingly.

A swim at the beach, lunch at one of the good seafood restaurants, a little sightseeing and a trip to the souvenir shop makes for a fantastic day.
