Before booking a family beach vacation, decide which type of accommodations will best fit your party. Should you rent a house where there's privacy, room to hang out, cook or barbecue? How about a bed and breakfast or an inn with shared facilities? Does your family prefer a hotel? Are you sailing your boat?

Once you've decided on the type of place you'd like for your family beach vacation: Go for the booking. Do this early, Block Island vacation veterans make their plans in January. If you are a first time renter it's never too early to start your inquiry. Houses rented by owners usually book earlier than houses listed with the realtors which start in January; the earlier you can start the better the selection.

If you are scheduling an event such as a wedding or a family reunion, it is not unusual to start planning a year or more ahead of time.

Most of the realtors and marinas honor their returning customers who usually book the same week every summer. After January 15th of each year they take new bookings.

Last Minute Vacancies

If you are staying at an inn, hotel or B&B, call as early as possible. July & August book up quickly and most places require a 2-3 night minimum. Last minute rooms do become available for you spontaneous day trippers, check the Chamber of Commerce (located in the ferry parking lot in Old Harbor) for last minute rooms or beach house rentals.

If you are looking for a rental house at the last minute you might score a really good deal on something that otherwise would have gone vacant for a week or weekend.

Traveling Mid Week? Find a Package Deal

Most hotels and inns on Block Island offer good package deals, especially during the mid week when rooms may be vacant.

I highly recommend a family beach vacation week or weekend getaway during the shoulder season or the off season.

In May & June or September & October the island is significantly less crowded and the weather can be spectacular with room rates & dates more flexible. The fall still boasts warm waters and deserted beaches! The service is better and more personalized, hotel and restaurant workers are not burned out or too busy to shoot the breeze and fill you in on everything you want to know.

What? No Camping?

Camping sorry, it's allowed only for the Scouts, there is no campground or RV park on Block Island. Sleeping on the beach is discouraged - they are patrolled at night.
