Fishing Block Island: A dream come true for any angler or aspiring fisherman looking for a great charter fishing trip. Island waters are home to many varieties of fish. Inshore trips bring up striped bass, fluke, bluefish, tautog, bonito, little tunney, sea bass and scup. Offshore trips with the big boys go for tuna, marlin and shark.

Striped Bass Fishing

There are several reputable charter boats on Block Island - all licensed boat captains with excellent fishing skills. You'll find their boats lined up at the Old Harbor town dock, right next to Ballard's. Look for Captain Matt King of Hula Charters, Captain Bill Gould of G. Willie. Surfcasting or Flyfishing

There are several sweet spots on Block Island. If you're a novice angler or don't know where to go you may hire a local guide. Another way to find out where to fish is to visit Twin Maples Bait & Tackle shop on Beach Avenue (just up the street from the Fire Barn.) Owner John is usually around talking shop with the locals. You might also check out info about our beaches.

The best way to learn where to fish is to gather your tips, then head out there and "put in your time!" Learning tides, currents and wind directions by being in mother nature herself will eventually land you your prize!

Shell Fishing Block Island

Get your clamming License at the Town Hall and dig yourself a raw bar of little neck, quahogs, steamers and oysters. There are a few main spots usually open in summer, check out Andy's Way. During the off season the entire pond usually opens up. Check the newspaper or Town Hall.

With the Kids

A recommended first time trip that is perfect for families is an inshore trip for bottom fish. You stay close to shore and the odds are in favor of hooking up often. Bottom fishing Block Island you may expect to catch fluke, scup and maybe some bluefish. Abundant and fairly easy to hook, you will be almost guaranteed a tight line. You may also request a shorter trip for bottom fishing. Expect to pay around $100-$150/hour for any custom trip for up to 6 people. If your young angler is an aspiring rodman, go for the striped bass trip, usually a minimum of 1/2 Day or 4 Hours.
