Rodmans Hollow - Block Island

rodmans hollow When the glaciers melted from Block Island, an area known as Rodmans Hollow was created by mother nature. This 230 acre piece of protected land is a great place to hike, with Greenway trails providing walkers with a full nature experience. Trails are clearly marked and easy to navigate for the beginner to moderate hiker.

A day trip in May gives visitors a view of the magnificent shad blooming. Migratory birds can be spotted in the hollow, as well as the nesting northern harriers. The almost extinct American burying beetle is alive and well at Rodman's hollow.

black rock Located off Cooneymus Road, the trail beginning is marked by a wooden sign. You may hike straight through the hollow all the way to Black Rock and the ocean, or take the long or short loop and hike up to the top of the knoll for a great panoramic view of the hollow and the ocean.

Of course, you do not have to walk at all. Simply drive by on your island or self guided tour and view the hollow from the road.
