The island fleet of local charter boats is located at the Old Harbor town dock. So how do you know which boat to charter? How do you plan the best striped bass fishing trip?
Chartering a boat can be a great adventure. Knowing what to ask your captain will ensure that you are in safe hands. Fishing is a wilderness experience and catching cannot always be guaranteed. If you know what to look for in a captain your chances of having a memorable day on the water just got better.

Questions to Ask
How Long have you been in Business? This is something you can easily find out ahead of time. Check out some websites, read testimonials and see what others have to say about their experiences.
Equipment & Gear What kind of rods and reels do you use? If you are a beginner you may not know anything about this. Asking anyway will start a good dialogue about fishing and give you a sense of how comfortable you are with the captain. If you are an experienced angler you should get a quick answer that includes the latest and state of the art gear.
What are we catching? What kind of fishing are you looking for? Light tackle, inshore, offshore or fly fishing? Your captain should be able to tell you what his specialties are, what you can expect to catch and recommend a trip that fits what you are looking for.
How Professional is your Crew? The small Block Island fleet mainly run with a captain and often one mate. You should ask if they are enrolled in a random drug testing program. It is federally mandated that the captain and crew be on a program. All captains must have Coast Guard Marine Captain Licenses. You should see life jackets readily available and the Captain should brief you on safety before leaving the dock.
