Summers On Block Island
by Carol Arbuthnot Fowler
(Hicksville, New York)
As long as I can remember from when I was a kid, we spent our summers at our home which belonged to my Mother and my Aunt. The house is located on Beacon Hill Road. We spent just about the whole summer there from July through Labor Day. Going to the beach every day was grand. My Grandfather John Arbuthnot was the beach policeman. He has since passed on and my other Grandfather Curtis Dunn used to carry the mail to the mainland on his boat the Mary E.
So you see we have a lot of history there.
My Uncle Bill, Aunt Laura and their daughter Virginia and both Grandfathers and a Grandmother are all buried in the Island Cemetery.
My Niece loving the island as she does decided to get married in St Andrews Church and her reception in the Atlantic Inn.
I have not been back in awhile and oh do I miss it.
